At the end of 2020, at the initiative of the parents of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, the Special Hospital for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation "Martin Horvat" Rovinj-Rovigno started conducting outpatient habilitation of neurorisk children and children with developmental disabilities as part of the "Early intervention team for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities" project financed by the founder of the Hospital - Istria County, which in 2024 provided almost 1,900 services which reviews and rehabilitation procedures, which covered the needs of a large number of the youngest patients and their young families from the area of Istria County.
Precisely because of the above needs, and after years of preparation and training of its own staff, the Special Hospital for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation "Martin Horvat" Rovinj-Rovigno is proud to announce that at the beginning of November 2025, for the first time in the history of the Hospital, a diagnostic examination by recording video electroencephalography (video EEG) with polygraphy and cerebral cartography in children began.
EEG is a non-invasive and painless diagnostic method that records the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp, displaying brain waves (rhythms) that provide insight into the function of the central nervous system and is crucial in the diagnosis of epilepsy and sleep disorders, and is also recommended for brain inflammation and injuries and when treating headaches and dizziness. It is also one of the indispensable diagnostic methods in monitoring children with neurorisk and developmental disabilities.
EEG recordings are performed by our nurses Anita Kobaš, bacc.med.techn. and Sanja Maružin, univ.mag.med.techn., trained at the Clinic, and the findings are read by assistant professor, Ph.D. Mladen Jašić, MD, a specialist in pediatrics, a specialist in neonatology and pediatric electroencephalography who, due to the needs of the Hospital, completed a one-year education in pediatric electroencephalography at the University "Tor Vergata" in Rome and was recognized by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia in May 2025 for the aforementioned specialization.
